On November 2nd, Olive Branch Cookery School transformed into a lively and inviting space for the Italian Nights Singles Cooking Class, bringing together 30 single men and women aged 40 to 60 for an unforgettable evening. Set in the cozy, charming atmosphere of Olive Branch, guests were welcomed with vibrant Limoncello Spritzers and refreshing Lime & Tonic cocktails, crafted by Nicholas, our entertaining and knowledgeable mixologist from B.Y.O.B (Bring Your Own Barmen). With his charm and skill, Nicholas set the perfect tone for the night, bringing laughter and excitement to our opening toast.

The evening officially kicked off as guests were randomly assigned to cooking stations, fostering a delightful mix of introductions and new connections right from the start. At each station, the freshest ingredients awaited, carefully prepared for an authentic Italian culinary experience. Guided by Margy from Olive Branch and her dedicated team of assistants, each group was introduced to their array of ingredients, including vibrant aubergines, baby marrows, onions, and peppadews, complemented by creamy mozzarella, plump olives, garnished cucumber and lettuce leaves, and artisanal ciabatta and salami.

With Margy’s expert guidance, each team set to work crafting colorful antipasto boards. The creations were as visually stunning as they were delicious, brimming with the classic flavors and textures of Italy. This shared experience brought everyone closer together, creating an atmosphere of collaboration, laughter, and budding friendships.

Once the antipasto boards were ready, the group gathered at the table, where they enjoyed the fruits of their labor and dove into “2 Truths and a Twist”—a fun icebreaker game designed to reveal unexpected stories and ignite conversations. This interactive game had everyone sharing laughs, surprises, and memorable stories, making for an excellent start to a night dedicated to connection and fun.

Following the antipasto course, it was time to move on to the main event—the cooking of the entrées. To foster even more connections, the ladies were invited to switch tables, joining new partners and new stations. The lively ambiance only grew as each team got to work on preparing the delicious main dishes: a savory Roast Vegetable and Chicken Lasagne and a rich Brinjal Bake in a classic Italian sauce topped with Parmesan. As wine flowed and the aroma of Italian cooking filled the kitchen, the atmosphere became even more vibrant. Laughter echoed through the cookery school as new friendships blossomed, and the night continued to promise exciting beginnings.

Once the main dishes were complete, everyone gathered al fresco under the stars to enjoy the meal. Surrounded by lush greenery and warmed by the soft glow of lights, the veranda became the perfect backdrop for dining, sharing stories, and deepening the connections formed over cooking. With Italian and romantic classics playing in the background, the sounds of laughter, cheerful clinking of glasses, and lively conversations filled the air, creating an ambiance that felt like a true Italian gathering.

As the evening continued, it was time for the grand finale—the dessert. Everyone returned to their cooking stations, glass of wine in hand, to decorate their dessert, a delightful Jamie Oliver Lemon Ricotta Cake. This final activity brought out everyone’s creative side and allowed for more bonding as guests chatted, laughed, and shared decorating tips. As they returned to the table, the dessert took center stage, and with a playlist transitioning into classic 80s and 90s hits, the mood became even more festive, with guests reminiscing and sharing stories over sweet bites of cake.

The evening concluded around 11 pm, with some newly found friends ready to continue the night at a local nightclub, while others headed home with fond memories and new friendships. The event was truly a success, bringing together a remarkable group of sophisticated professionals, entrepreneurs, and singles from across Johannesburg. Conversations covered everything from dating and the single life to parenting, work, and grand adventure stories.
